Allied forces swept through North Africa and Iraq, Iran, all over the ME in WW2 without air conditioning. This may well point out how soft Americans have become. Too fat, too slow, too lazy, not enough real demands on our discipline and our physical conditioning. It’s the urbanization of our attitudes and our bodies. Why walk when you can drive? Why cook with a fast food place just around the corner? Why not let private schools nearly eliminate phys ed?

Above we see why we should not go the easy route so much.

The number of casualties, both in absolute terms as well as a percentage of troops deployed, was staggering compared to the current engagements in similar theatres. Arguably, care for the overall physical well-being of the troops is a contributing factor, along with other tactical developments. Maybe the a/c is over the top, maybe it is not - the cost is probably inflated much as all military procurement costs are. But the mere fact of a/c is not indicative of “softer” troops today compared to WWII.

You know, I’ve heard this before. The last time was from the military and political classes of The Axis.

“Oh, Americans are weak. Americans lack discipline. Americans don’t have the heart for combat. Americans are afraid to die.”

Where’s The Axis now?

Fighting with us as Allies in NATO if I can tie the nation and the timeline together. And BTW for some time there was accusations they were not pulling their weight in the agreement. They too have softened.

To support my point I’ll show where the military was instrumental in getting school breakfasts started to help nourish the population. Now they lobby to change school meals to help prevent obesity in recruits. The military can hardly be more fit than the youthful population at large. I’m not disrespecting our dedicated soldiers, I’m pointing out an illustrative issue. The nation got physically & mentally soft as it urbanized coincident with peace and prosperity.
